Middle School

For many in Guatemala formal education ends after primary school. This is especially true in rural indigenous communities, where there is little access to middle school and where parents may not have the economic resources to enroll their children. This often results in girls being left out of the education system. In Guatemala, where overall enrollment in middle school is low, rural indigenous girls are the least likely to continue education past primary school.

Santa María Tzejá, however, is the exception to the norm. The community has maintained a strong focus on education, recognizing its importance to economic and social independence. Santa María Tzejá’s middle school provides a rich progressive education, including music and theater, as well as a focus on indigenous Mayan history and language.

Partners for Guatemala Education provides support to fund tuition for middle school, so parents do not have to decide which child gets to go to school. We also provide support for teacher salaries to help ensure a quality education.
